Establishing a Cancer Evolution Research Group within the Hungarian Research Network

Dr. Gábor Boross, an esteemed evolutionary and systems biologist, is returning to Hungary as part of the HUN-REN Welcome Home and Foreign Researcher Recruitment Program. He has recently completed his postdoctoral research on lung cancer evolution in mice at Stanford University in the United States and will establish a new research group at the Institute of Evolution of the HUN-REN Center for Ecological Research in Hungary.
During his time in the United States, Dr. Boross made significant strides in the development of Tuba-seq technology, which involves utilizing genome engineering techniques to induce specific mutations in lung epithelial cells and marking tumors with DNA barcodes. This cutting-edge technology will be brought to Hungary and applied to create high-coverage interaction maps and describe adaptive landscapes to determine the progression of cancer.
The HUN-REN Welcome Home and Foreign Researcher Recruitment Program was announced in 2023, with the aim of bringing together both Hungarian and foreign researchers to form research groups at HUN-REN research sites in Hungary. This program supports outstanding scientific projects as part of winning proposals and is a testament to Hungary’s commitment to advancing scientific research and collaboration.
HUN-REN is an independent public budgetary institution established by the Parliament with the aim of managing and operating the publicly funded independent research network in Hungary. Comprising 11 research centers, 7 research institutes, and 116 additional supported research groups, HUN-REN conducts research in various disciplines of mathematics and natural sciences, life sciences, social sciences, and the humanities. The network builds on the rich legacy of knowledge accumulated over more than a century to support and promote scientific innovation in Hungary.
As Dr. Gábor Boross returns to Hungary, his work and the introduction of Tuba-seq technology will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and advancement of cancer research in the country, further solidifying Hungary’s position as a leader in scientific and medical research.
