Ethnic Hungarians Outside Hungary Receive Support from Government

Hungarian children and youth living beyond the country’s borders are set to receive support through the government program known as “Homeland in Hungarian.” Árpád János Potápi, the state secretary of policies for Hungarian communities abroad, announced on Friday that a total of 227,159 ethnic Hungarian students will benefit from this initiative.

Since the 2002/2003 academic year, the government has been providing financial assistance to Hungarian children and youth studying in their mother tongue in their place of birth. Eligible applicants can receive a gross amount of 100,000 forints (approximately EUR 250) for education-upbringing support and an additional 100,000 forints for student support.

This year, there were a total of 237,296 applications submitted for the program, out of which 227,159 were approved. The distribution of support will begin next week and continue in the following weeks, ensuring that Hungarian students beyond the borders can access the resources they need to pursue their education in their native language.

The “Homeland in Hungarian” scheme plays a crucial role in preserving the cultural identity and language of ethnic Hungarian communities living outside of Hungary. By providing financial assistance to support education in the mother tongue, the government is investing in the future of these young individuals and fostering a sense of connection to their heritage.
