EU and USA to Take Urgent Action for Ukraine, Says Borrell
After a meeting of foreign ministers of EU countries, Josep Borrell emphasized the need for both the EU and the USA to take urgent action for Ukraine. Speaking at a press conference following the meeting, Borrell highlighted the importance of transatlantic unity in addressing the situation in Ukraine.
During the meeting, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba provided updates on the latest developments in the war via video conference. Borrell announced that decisions were made to increase support to Ukraine, with the first being a proposal to increase the “European Peace Fund” used for military aid to Ukraine by 5 billion euros.
Another decision taken at the meeting was to impose sanctions on individuals and organizations responsible for the death of dissident Aleksey Navalny, who is currently detained in Russia. Approximately 30 individuals and organizations involved in the murder of Navalny will face sanctions, although specific names were not disclosed.
Russia’s frozen assets were also discussed during the meeting, with strong support from member countries for using these assets to further increase military support to Ukraine. Borrell clarified that the “Ukraine Aid Fund” within the European Peace Fund is specifically intended to assist Ukraine, not develop the European defense industry.
The meeting also addressed the situation in Belarus, with plans to take additional measures to support the Belarusian opposition in line with the recommendations of member countries. Overall, Borrell stressed the need for coordinated action and solidarity among EU countries and the USA in addressing the ongoing crises in Ukraine and Belarus.
