EU Introduces First AI Regulations

The European Parliament Approves First Set of Rules for Artificial Intelligence

The European Parliament’s committee in Strasbourg has approved the first set of rules for artificial intelligence (AI). These rules include the prohibition of face recognition by computer networks without the participation of people. Users should also be notified when communicating with a chatbot instead of a human.

The purpose of these rules is to ensure that AI is used only for the benefit of individuals, businesses, and the state. It will also allow the public to ascertain whether AI is being used for law enforcement agencies or migration control. Sarah Chander, representative of the Association of European Digital Rights, commented that “these rules provide stricter guarantees.”

The set of similar rules proposed by Brussels in 2021 is expected to be confirmed in June, after which the final text will be agreed upon by EU member states. By the end of this year, the first-ever regulation of artificial intelligence is expected to become a reality.

The new rules will provide insight into how AI systems are used, and ensure that privacy is respected. By increasing transparency, these new regulations will give consumers confidence in the technologies that they use. It is hoped that these regulations will set a new global standard for ethical AI practices.
