EU Presidency: Addressing Demographic Challenges and Competitiveness Priorities
The Hungarian EU Presidency will address demographic challenges and competitiveness, as stated by Judit Varga, Head of the Hungarian Parliament’s European Affairs Committee.
During a conference held by the network of national parliamentary EU committee chairs (COSAC) in Namur, Belgium, Judit Varga presented the plans for the upcoming Hungarian EU Presidency, set to begin in July.
One of the main priorities outlined by Varga is the issue of EU enlargement, particularly in relation to the Western Balkan countries that have been waiting for 20 years to become member states. Varga emphasized the need for a merit-based principle to be applied to their accession and warned against employing double standards and fast-track approaches.
She also addressed Ukraine’s accession to the EU, stressing the importance of avoiding ideology-driven politics and noting that Europe needs to change in order to be recognized in the future.
In addition to the aforementioned priorities, the Hungarian government will also focus on addressing the EU’s productivity and demographic challenges during its six-month presidency. It was announced that competitiveness and demographic issues will be key areas of emphasis, especially in light of the negative demographic trend across Europe.
Judit Varga highlighted the need for change and acknowledged that European election trends show that Europeans are strengthening the Hungarian opinion on key issues. She underlined the importance of winning on the right and emphasized the role of sovereign forces as catalysts for bringing about positive change in Europe.
