EU to Introduce Digital Driver’s License

The European Union (EU) Council has announced that a new agreement has been reached on negotiations between member states and the European Parliament (EP) regarding updated rules for driver’s licenses.

The EU Council stated that there will be changes to the minimum requirements for driver suitability across EU countries by updating the driver’s license directive. Additionally, rules regarding trial periods for novice drivers will be made more consistent.

One of the key changes resulting from this amendment is the introduction of a uniform mobile driver’s license for all EU citizens by the end of 2030. This mobile license will be stored in a future European digital identity wallet and will be recognized in all EU member countries.

Furthermore, individuals who choose to obtain a physical driver’s license, which also serves as an identification card, will have a validity period of 10 years. For those using the driver’s license solely for automobile and motorcycle purposes, the validity period will be extended to 15 years.

Overall, these updates aim to create a more rational, inclusive, and digital community in the EU with standardized rules and arrangements for driver’s licenses.
