European Government Launches Massive State-run Summer Camps for Families in Need
Europe’s largest and most complex state-subsidized camp program, the Elizabeth Camps, is set to have 1.4 million campers participate from its inception in 2012 until the end of 2024. The Minister of Culture and Innovation, Balázs Hankó, emphasized this achievement during a press conference in Zánka, located on the northern shore of Lake Balaton.
Hankó mentioned that this year, the Hungarian state has allocated HUF 9 billion (approximately EUR 22.8 million) to support the Elizabeth Camps. Over 40,000 children are expected to enjoy their holidays in camps located in Zánka, Fonyódliget (on the southern shore of Lake Balaton), and Transylvania. Additionally, a new location in Zalaszabar, at Kis-Balaton, has been added to the list of Elizabeth Camps where therapeutic camps will now be held.
Furthermore, the minister revealed that around 3,000 young Hungarians living abroad will also have the opportunity to visit Lake Balaton this summer as part of the program.
The safety of the children in the Elizabeth Camps is a top priority, ensured by a professional security system and well-trained supervision.
The Elizabeth Program, initiated by the Hungarian government in 2012, aims to provide social services, including the Elizabeth Camps scheme. This program offers discounted holidays through a social holiday scheme, with a specific focus on supporting large families, people with disabilities, and pensioners who may not have the means to afford such vacation opportunities.
It is worth noting that the Elizabeth Camps are not limited to summer vacations but are available throughout the year for families in need. Thanks to this program, children can participate in various camps, such as sleep-away camps, family camps, and summer day-care camps.
Overall, the Elizabeth Camps serve as a significant initiative to provide meaningful experiences and support to children and families who may otherwise not have the opportunity to enjoy such activities.
