EU’s Role in the Cyprus Stalemate: A Central Challenge

UBP Denounces EU’s Neglect of Turkish Cypriots in 2023-2024 Report
In a recent statement, Oğuzhan Hasipoğlu, the Secretary General of the National Unity Party (UBP), expressed deep disappointment regarding the European Parliament’s (EP) 2023-2024 Türkiye Report. Hasipoğlu criticized the report for disregarding the Turkish Cypriot community, emphasizing that it highlights the unresolved nature of the Cyprus Problem.
Hasipoğlu stated, "We are saddened to witness once again that the European Union has overlooked the Turkish Cypriot people in its latest report. The perspective presented is markedly limited to the Greek Cypriot administration, which demonstrates a lack of inclusivity."
He further argued that the concept of a bi-communal, bi-regional federation as a solution is outdated and does not reflect the current realities on the island. He noted that since 2017, the understanding of a federal solution in Cyprus has diminished significantly.
Pointing out the evolving stance of Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) toward a two-state solution, Hasipoğlu declared, "We will not seek the EU’s approval for our vision, which only gains strength day by day."
The UBP Secretary General also condemned the arrangement of separate sessions during President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to Cyprus, criticizing the EU for ignoring Türkiye’s vital security role in the region and the interests of the Turkish Cypriot people.
He urged the European Union to honor its commitments to Turkish Cypriots, including initiatives like the ‘direct trade’ charter. Hasipoğlu argued that any encouragement or criticism should not be directed at the Turkish Cypriot side, emphasizing their positive responses to past proposals.
In conclusion, Hasipoğlu called for the EU to take meaningful actions that foster relationships between the two communities on the island, insisting that a fair, sustainable, and realistic solution requires genuine efforts from the Greek side.
