Apartment Collapse in Aksaray: Residents Evacuated and Construction Under Investigation
An apartment collapse occurred on Kürkçübaşı Fountain Street in the Aksaray district. According to reports, the collapse was caused by incorrect excavation in the construction site next to the Kismet Apartment. Luckily, there were no casualties or injuries reported on the lower floors affected by the collapse. However, residents of the apartment were in a state of panic after hearing the commotion. Emergency services swiftly responded to the incident, including the police, fire, and municipal police teams.
As a precautionary measure, the authorities evacuated the apartment building and took measures to prevent further collapses by filling the excavation site with rubble. The police sealed off the area and immediately initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
Luba Tavşancı, one of the affected residents, shared her harrowing experience. She stated that she was locked inside her apartment when the collapse occurred. Tavşancı managed to evacuate her children through a window, but her bedroom was completely destroyed. Expressing gratitude that she and her children were unharmed, she mentioned that they will be staying with her mother-in-law for the time being, awaiting further updates.
Another resident, Yıldız Geyik, described the chaotic situation they faced. With four to five children and no access to their homes, they were left stranded on the streets since morning. Geyik expressed frustration over the lack of officials providing assistance and accommodation for displaced residents. She added that she heard a loud noise at 10 a.m. and rushed to find that her appliances and bedroom had collapsed. Geyik further criticized the contractors for performing demolition work with little regard for the safety and lives of the residents.
İrfan Bozbulut, another tenant affected by the collapse, expressed their plight as victims and shared uncertainty about their immediate future. At present, they anticipate staying in parks, as they have been unable to find suitable alternate accommodations.
The incident has raised concerns about construction and excavation practices in the area, prompting authorities to take swift action. The investigation into the collapse will provide insight into the cause and any potential negligence involved. As the affected residents wait for answers, it is hoped that measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure the safety of residents in construction areas.
