Evaluation of the BRT Agenda by Olgun – BRTK
Former Chief Negotiator Ergün Olgun recently appeared on the 18th Hour program on BRT, where he addressed the current state of Turkish Cypriots and the need for significant changes to secure a better future for the country.
Olgun expressed his disappointment in the lack of influence that Turkish Cypriots have in the region, attributing it partly to their own shortcomings. He emphasized the necessity of enhancing administrative and economic power to meet the expectations of Turkish Cypriots, protect their state, and ensure a sustainable future in Cyprus.
Furthermore, Olgun highlighted the issue of brain drain in the TRNC, stating that there is a significant loss of young talent leaving the country. He stressed the importance of increasing economic and cultural dynamism to retain the youth in Cyprus and entrust them with shaping the nation’s future.
Regarding the education system, Olgun criticized the failure to prepare the younger generation for the challenges faced by Turkish Cypriots, emphasizing the need to instill a sense of identity, history, and global competitiveness in the youth of the country.
Olgun also pointed out the lack of productivity within political parties and universities, urging the need for innovative policies and a focus on human infrastructure rather than just physical developments.
In terms of the Cyprus issue, Olgun emphasized the necessity of a balanced approach that considers the dynamics between Turkey, Greek Cypriots, and international stakeholders. He highlighted the indispensable role of Turkey in addressing the complex dimensions of the Cyprus problem and stressed the need for sustainable solutions based on mutual respect and recognition.
In conclusion, Olgun underscored the importance of engaging young Turkish Cypriots living abroad in shaping the future of the country and breaking the cycle of stagnation within the society. He expressed concerns about the current policy direction and urged for a more inclusive and forward-thinking approach to address the challenges faced by Turkish Cypriots in the region.
