Disabled Woman Faces Eviction in Antalya: A Heartbreaking Story
In Antalya, a heartbreaking story has emerged of Emel Örün, a 58-year-old woman with 63 percent disability due to polio she contracted at just 6 months old. Örün, who has been living in Antalya for 20 years, is facing eviction from her home after turning a rented shop into a house.
Emel Örün, who used to work as a beautician and later started making and selling flower crowns to make ends meet along with her disability allowance, suffered a serious leg injury in a traffic accident 4 years ago, leaving her in a wheelchair. Due to her low income, Örün was forced to rent a shop instead of a home, where she lived for about 8 years.
The recent eviction decision was based on allegations of non-payment of rent for the shop, despite Örün’s claims that she had paid most of the rent, some in person and some through the bank. Her lawyer, Mümtaz Sami Özok, argued that the increase in rent by four times and the demand for retroactive 5-year rent were unjustified, especially considering the absence of an IBAN in the rental contract.
Emel Örün expressed deep sadness over the eviction, stating that she has been living under difficult conditions as a disabled person for years and that being homeless on the streets is a devastating situation, especially as the new year approaches.
