Excavation Uncovers Large Roman Legion Camp in Hungary – See Photos!
Located beneath what is now Komárom-Szőny on the flood-free terraces of the right bank of the River Danube lies Brigetio, a former Roman town and legionary camp that has been the focus of extensive excavations since 1992. This Roman settlement has provided a wealth of insight into its unique characteristics, making it a gem of the Roman world.
Deputy State Secretary for Public Collections and Cultural Development, Máté Vincze, highlighted the exceptional nature of Brigetio within the Roman Empire. Only a handful of similar soldier and civilian towns from the Roman era have survived, making Brigetio a truly remarkable archaeological site. In fact, the Roman Emperor Valentinian I met his end within the legionary fortress on 17th November 375 AD, where his son was subsequently proclaimed emperor.
Reports suggest that Brigetio was a multicultural town with a population of 15-20 thousand residents, situated at the border of the Roman world. The town served as a hub for traders due to its strategic location where significant trade routes converged, and the Limes Road passed through. Brigetio was divided into three distinct districts: the military camp, the civilian town, and the legionary base.
Recent excavations have unveiled the military bathing complex, the largest building within the legionary camp, spanning an impressive 6-7 thousand square metres. This archaeological find sheds light on the advanced infrastructure and amenities available in ancient Brigetio. Additionally, the excavation of the hypocaust system, an early form of central heating, provides valuable insight into the daily lives of residents in this Roman town.
Brigetio was home to the Roman army for over 300 years, with two legions, Legio XI Claudia and Legio I Adiutrix, based within its walls. The latter legion eventually withdrew from the province in the 430s AD, marking the end of an era in Brigetio’s history.
