Budapest Airport Prepares for Construction of Terminal 3 to Handle Record Number of Passengers
Budapest Airport has experienced the strongest passenger growth in Europe in October, with total passenger numbers expected to exceed 17 million by the end of the year. The airport operator is anticipating robust growth in passenger traffic in the future and has therefore started preparations for the construction of Terminal 3. This new terminal will ensure that the increasing passenger traffic can be handled with high service quality.
Ferenc Liszt International Airport has set individual records in terms of passenger numbers in every month of 2024 so far. By the end of October, total passenger traffic has already surpassed the total figure for the previous year. The airport is on track to serve more than 17 million passengers by the end of the year. With excellent airline relations and ongoing aviation development work, Budapest Airport is also looking to launch new long-haul flights in the future. The owners and management are forecasting 20 million passengers by 2030, based on Hungary’s attractiveness as a touristic destination.
Francois Berisot, CEO of Budapest Airport, stated, “We can already see that we will handle a record number of passengers at the airport by the end of this year. Budapest and Hungary are becoming increasingly popular worldwide, and more tourists are arriving every year. Significant developments are needed to serve the increasing passenger traffic with high quality. The design of Terminal 3 is already underway, and the goals are ambitious; to serve more passengers with high quality and continuously expanding infrastructure.”
Terminal 3 will be designed with sustainability in mind, aligning with Budapest Airport’s goal to reduce emissions to zero by 2030. The construction of the new apron will allow for the handling of 12 aircraft simultaneously and will be the first phase of a major apron development. The terminal development is expected to be completed within eight years.
According to a study by KPMG, the investment and construction activities associated with the construction of Terminal 3 could create up to 63.9 billion HUF of indirect value added through the supply chain by 2027. It could also provide jobs for 6,400 people and contribute up to 23.4 billion HUF to the incomes of Hungarian families.
With preparations underway for the construction of Terminal 3, Budapest Airport is gearing up to handle a record number of passengers in the coming years, further solidifying its position as a key player in Europe’s aviation industry.
