Expansion of Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania to Include Leisure Section

The Romulus Vuia National Ethnographic Park in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, is set to undergo renovations and expansions to enhance the visitor experience. The open-air section of the Ethnographic Museum of Transylvania will receive new spaces for leisure activities and folk crafts, thanks to funding from the EU.

Located in a more natural part of the city next to the Hoja Forest, the park will also see the restoration of the forest area and hillsides around the ski jump. The aim of the project is to make the facility even more attractive and cater to the increasing demand for recreational activities in recent years.

István Vákár, vice-president of the county assembly of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania, highlighted the importance of hosting events that are significant to the Hungarian community at the open-air museum. These events include the Donathon running race and common cooking organized during the Hungarian Days in Cluj-Napoca.

The renovation project, with a budget of nearly 5.9 million euros, will also include the construction of an outdoor stage requested by youth organizations. Additionally, a separate restoration project supported by the Romanian Ministry of Culture will focus on restoring 12 buildings within the open-air museum, with a budget of approximately 409,000 euros.

The Romulus Vuia National Ethnographic Park, established in 1929, is Romania’s oldest open-air museum, featuring 18th-19th century farmhouses, wooden churches, and farm buildings from various regions of Transylvania. The park hosts various cultural events, such as the Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF) and the Jazz in the Park festival, attracting over 100,000 visitors annually.

With these upcoming renovations and expansions, the Romulus Vuia National Ethnographic Park is poised to offer an enriched experience for visitors and continue to preserve the cultural heritage of Transylvania.
