Expansion of Hungarian Staff at UN Counter-Terrorism Office in Budapest
Hungary to Provide More Experts for UN Office of Counter-Terrorism in Budapest
Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced on Friday that the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism in Budapest will be employing additional Hungarian experts as part of a new agreement. Following his discussions with Vladimir Voronkov, the UN’s under-secretary-general for counter-terrorism, Szijjártó emphasized the global challenge posed by terrorism in various regions such as the Sahel in Africa, Syria in the Middle East, and Pakistan and Afghanistan in Asia.
Szijjártó highlighted the importance of the UN’s role in the successful fight against terrorism, especially as the threat continues to impact previously considered safe regions. Currently, the UN centre in Budapest has a staff of 28, including 8 Hungarians, who perform crucial functions like monitoring the movements of terrorists and coordinating efforts to prevent their activities.
Under the new agreement, one-third of the staff at the UN facility in Budapest will be Hungarian, indicating a stronger collaboration between Hungary and the UN in combatting terrorism. The expansion of Hungarian experts within the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism reflects the country’s commitment to addressing global security challenges.
