Expansion of Toll Changes to New Motorways and Counties in 2024

New Decree in Hungary Will Add 230 Kilometers of Motorways to the Toll Road System
Starting January 1, a new decree issued by the Ministry of Construction and Transport in Hungary will extend the total length of tolled motorways by 230 kilometers. This includes the entire length of the busiest section of the M0 motorway.
In addition to the M0 motorway, several other roads will now be charged for passenger cars, including the M31 motorway, the entire length of the M4, the M44, the M30 motorway, and the M76.
The changes will also bring two more counties, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok and Békés, to the list of toll roads. In 2024, motorway tariffs will increase by 16.4 percent compared to the previous August consumer price. A new one-day motorway sticker will also be introduced, priced at HUF 5,150 (EUR 13.5).
The introduction of one-day stickers has raised concerns, as they could result in a loss of revenue for the country’s toll systems. While the change will benefit transit traffic, it will not benefit the public budget.
In comparison to neighboring countries, Austria and the Czech Republic also have one-day vignettes for motorways, priced between HUF 3200 and 3300 (EUR 8.3 – 8.6). Romania offers one-day vignettes for freight vehicles and tourist buses at a price between EUR 4 and 11, while Slovakia has not yet agreed on one-day tickets.
It is clear that the expansion of the toll road system and the introduction of one-day motorway stickers will have a significant impact on both traffic and revenue in Hungary.
