Experience a Carnival Extravaganza at the Museum of Ethnography
The Museum of Ethnography is gearing up to showcase the rich traditions, superstitions, and curiosities of the carnival season this Saturday. From Epiphany on January 6th to Ash Wednesday on March 5th in 2025, the carnival season is a time of celebration, liberation, and relaxation from strenuous workdays, as per the Museum’s website.
On February 22, 2025, the Museum will host a variety of programs designed for families and visitors of all ages to explore the vibrant traditions of this festive season. The day will kick off with the Carnival MÉTA Matinee for families and culminate in an evening concert by Los Andinos, along with a fascinating story on how a spectacular Bolivian carnival costume landed in the museum.
An exhibition on Busó traditions, a prominent feature in the museum’s permanent collection, will also be highlighted. Visitors will even have the chance to try their hand at carving a Busó mask in the MÉTA space.
The Busójárás, an annual celebration in the town of Mohács in southern Hungary, will also be featured. The event, held at the end of the Carnival season, boasts Busós adorned in traditional masks, along with folk music, masquerading, parades, and dancing.
Through presentations and guided tours, guests can delve into the customs of the carnival season, including the significance of masquerade attire and its ties to courtship, matchmaking, and marriage. The museum will also screen Lajos Boglár’s 1967 documentary on Women’s carnival in Martraalmás, an event that stirred controversy in its time.
Moreover, visitors can partake in a traditional pig slaughter, enjoy a puppet play titled Truka, the Dancing Goat, and savor live zither music in the museum’s temporary exhibition “May the Zithers Sing Merrily!”
