Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s Big Interview: Priorities for 2024 and Crucial National Agenda
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev recently sat down for a substantial interview with the Egemen Qazaqstan national newspaper to discuss his administration’s key priorities for 2024 and to delve into crucial topics on the national agenda.
During the interview, the President touched upon a range of significant issues, including the tragic events that took place in January of 2022, as well as ambitious economic plans and the country’s foreign policy.
Of particular focus was the discussion of the new economic model that was announced by Tokayev in his September address to the nation. The President emphasized a push towards strategic goals, including doubling the national economy to $450 billion by 2029. Responding to questions about the realism of this economic target, particularly in light of projections from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, Tokayev addressed the expectations for economic growth in Kazakhstan from 2023 to 2024, which are estimated to be no more than 3-4%.
Yerkin Tukumov, director of the Kazakhstan Institute for Strategic Studies, expressed confidence in the achievability of the economic target set by the President. He emphasized that with the consistent implementation of planned measures, it is realistic to surpass this indicator and shared the importance of focusing not just on numbers, but also on ensuring that economic growth directly impacts the lives of ordinary citizens.
In addition to economic initiatives, there was also a strong emphasis on human capital development. Tukumov stressed the need for investments in real research universities, high-quality secondary education, science, healthcare, and a conducive environment, asserting that all of this is achievable with the right prioritization of resources and authority.
Nikita Shatalov, deputy of the Mazhilis, praised Tokayev’s interview as a reaffirmation of the President’s political perspectives and plans. He emphasized the President’s commitment to not breaking his promises and his intention to uphold the will of the people and consult with the Parliament on decisions affecting the fate of the nation.
Regarding foreign policy, Tokayev reiterated Kazakhstan’s commitment to protecting its national interests and addressing strategic challenges. He highlighted the growing global interest in Central Asia and the increased demand for the C5+ dialogue platform. Kazakhstan is expected to host the next Consultative Meeting of the Heads of State of Central Asia this year, and will also play host to several large-scale international events while chairing six international organizations in 2024.
