President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan addressed the 20 July Peace and Freedom Day Ceremony in the TRNC, expressing his gratitude for the individuals who paved the way for the 1974 Peace Operation. He commemorated Ecevit, Erbakan, and Türkeş with mercy and gratitude.
On the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation, President Erdoğan expressed his happiness to be present and paid tribute to the martyrs. He wished a prosperous life to the heroic veterans and congratulated the Cypriot people for upholding the memory of the martyrs. President Erdoğan also showed mercy and gratitude towards the then Prime Minister Ecevit, Deputy Prime Minister Erbakan, and Mr. Türkeş for their role in the Peace Operation.
President Erdoğan emphasized the importance of understanding the past in order to confidently move towards the future. He highlighted the suffering endured by the Turkish Cypriots during the period from 1963 to 1974, where they were subjected to persecution, bloodshed, and tears. Despite the hardships, the Turkish Cypriots never succumbed to oppression. President Erdoğan praised the Turkish army for bringing peace and tranquility to Cyprus through their heroic actions 49 years ago, demonstrating to the world that Turkish Cypriots are never alone.
President Erdoğan stressed that their efforts are focused on ensuring the lasting nature of the peace brought to the island in 1974. He condemned the sick mentality that led to persecution but emphasized their commitment to a fair solution rather than seeking revenge. He asserted that Turkey will always be the guarantee of existence, sovereignty, and the protection of Turkish Cypriots’ rights. Any new negotiations must be based on equal status on the island.
In conclusion, President Erdoğan called on the international community to recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and familiarize themselves with its existence as soon as possible, reiterating a historic plea made at the UN.
