The Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum offers a rich and diverse collection of new works, showcasing valuable pieces from the Eastern Roman and Ottoman periods. Many of these works are on display for the first time, including the Holy Quran from the 15th century and rare Christian candlesticks and liturgical materials.
With approximately 1000 visitors daily, the museum has seen an increase in footfall since its opening. Director Dr. Murat Bozcu notes that visitors are drawn to the museum’s historical artifacts and rich narration, along with the immersive academic information provided. The museum serves as a gateway to the Hagia Sophia Mosque, providing detailed insights and a pleasant experience for all guests.
As the first of the new experience museums under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Hagia Sophia History and Experience Museum offers a digital journey through the mosque’s 1700-year history. Visitors can explore different rooms and technological exhibits that bring the history of Hagia Sophia to life.
Bozcu highlights the importance of the museum’s collection, particularly its focus on Christianity. With 204 carefully curated works on display, the museum showcases a range of artifacts previously stored in warehouses. From architectural pieces of the first Hagia Sophia building to rare manuscripts and religious items, the museum presents a comprehensive collection for visitors to enjoy.
Covering approximately 3,200 square meters, the museum also houses documents related to the Hagia Sophia Mosque Foundation, shedding light on its administration and expenditures. Through immersive visual and audio displays in 23 languages, visitors can delve into the history of Hagia Sophia during both the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
The museum tour follows a chronological corridor, presenting original pieces ranging from temple bricks to historical paintings. Developed by DEM Museology under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the museum’s visual and audio presentations were created by a team of digital design artists, musicians, and storytellers to enhance the visitor experience.
