Exploring the Anthony Gate: A Nature Lover’s Paradise
Always Friends of Nature Group Discovers Historic Gate in Famagusta
The Always Friends of Nature Group in Famagusta, renowned for its environmental and cultural initiatives, made a significant discovery within the walls of Famagusta. The group identified what is believed to be Anthony’s Gate, located between the four city gates and St.
Yusuf Yüksel Şentuğ, Chairman of the Always Friends of Nature Group, stated, “Based on our information and research, we have pinpointed the location of Anthony’s Gate. We have also identified passages that were once used by residents of Famagusta to access the sea, known as the ‘holes’ through which people passed.”
During the investigation, led by Özkan Korun, the group examined both the interior and exterior of the walls. Şentuğ shared insights from their findings, explaining, “Our discovery of Anthony’s Gate has led us to believe that it was not a gate leading to the sea, but rather a passage wide enough to accommodate horse-drawn carriages from Karakol.”
He added, “In the past, there were separate passages for men and women to reach the sea, which were referred to as the ‘hole through which women passed’ and the ‘hole through which men passed.’ This historical revelation sheds light on our city’s past, and we are proud to uncover this piece of history.”
The Always Friends of Nature Group continues to engage in meaningful projects that preserve and promote the rich heritage of Famagusta. Their recent discovery adds another layer to the city’s fascinating history, providing valuable insights into a bygone era.
