Exploring the Hidden Gems of Kazakhstan: A Focus on Sustainable Tourism and Authentic Experiences

Kazakhstan, a country known for its rich history and unique blend of modernity with tradition, is on the cusp of a tourism renaissance. Kairat Sadvakassov, the chairman of Kazakh Tourism national company, shared insights into how the tourism industry in Kazakhstan is experiencing a remarkable recovery after the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite facing a 75% decline in tourism arrivals during the pandemic, Kazakhstan has seen a resurgence in both domestic and international tourism. With a focus on becoming a central hub for Meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) tourism in Central Asia, Kazakhstan has witnessed a significant increase in tourist arrivals.
The country has strategically positioned itself to attract tourists from various markets, with a particular focus on key markets like Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkiye, and China. The reciprocal visa-free regime with China has led to a surge in Chinese tourists visiting Kazakhstan, with plans in place to promote Kazakhstan as a tourist destination in China throughout 2024.
Sadvakassov highlighted three hidden gems within Kazakhstan – Turkistan, Katon Karagay, and Baikonur town – each offering a unique experience blending natural beauty, cultural heritage, and modern amenities. Efforts are being made to promote sustainable tourism practices, with a focus on engaging local communities and enhancing the overall tourism experience.
As Kazakhstan continues to open its doors to the world, Sadvakassov shared his favorite itinerary for first-time visitors, including exploring Katon Karagay National Park, visiting Almaty and Charyn Canyon, and experiencing the beauty of Astana, the capital city.
With a commitment to sustainable tourism practices and a focus on providing diverse and compelling experiences for tourists, Kazakhstan is poised to emerge as a top tourism destination in the region.
