Exploring the Impact of Herbal Drugs on Nature and Health in Famagusta

A panel organized by various environmental organizations in Cyprus shed light on the harmful effects of herbicides on nature and human health. The event, titled “Effects of Herbs on Nature and Human Health,” was organized by the Green Peace Movement, Turkish Cypriot Medical Association, Chamber of Landscape Architects, Cyprus Wetch Society, Social Existence Association, and Karpaz Friends Association Organization Committee.

Dr.Gülizar Eroğlu, President of the Chamber of Landscape Architects and an Environmental Education and Management Specialist, delivered a speech at the panel held at Famagusta Bandabuliya. Eroğlu emphasized that herbicides used in nature lead to a reduction in biological diversity, destruction of green areas, and negative impacts on landscape applications in the country.

One of the concerning points raised by Eroğlu was the contamination of cultivated foods with herbicide residues that can occur when these chemicals mix with the soil and are washed into the ground by rainwater. This, in turn, poses serious health risks to humans, especially if herbicides are used in agricultural lands where animals graze.

Furthermore, Eroğlu highlighted the significant damage caused to natural grasses, bees, insects, and butterflies by herbicides, leading to a decrease in both the variety and number of living species in nature. Eroğlu stressed the importance of municipalities paying close attention to the use of herbicides to protect the environment and human health.

The panel served as a wakeup call to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of herbicides on both nature and human health. It underscored the urgent need for stricter regulations and practices to minimize the use of these harmful chemicals and preserve the biodiversity of our ecosystems.
