Exploring the János Esterházy Pilgrimage Center in Slovakia
The János Esterhazy Pilgrimage Center in Dolné Obdokovce (Alsóbodok) is a significant memorial site dedicated to one of Hungary’s greatest politicians and martyrs of the twentieth century. Count János Esterhazy, who perished as a prisoner of the Czechoslovak communist regime in 1957, is honored at this sacred location located in the magical hills of the Zobor region.
The center, established by visionary patriot Boldizsár Paulisz and continued by his son Marián after his passing in 2018, serves as a place of remembrance not only for Count Esterhazy but also for all victims of communism from the Visegrad 4 countries – Slovakia, Hungary, Czechia, and Poland.
Visitors can explore a small museum at the entrance to the private park, showcasing artifacts related to Esterhazy, including personal items like his glasses, prayer books, and a paper rosary. The mausoleum, where Esterhazy’s remains rest alongside those of the Paulisz family, features a dome adorned with the national emblems of the Visegrad four countries, symbolizing Esterhazy’s connections to all of them.
The ongoing operations of the pilgrimage center are sustained through various means, including visitor fees, donations, and the Paulisz family’s private resources. The goal is to achieve self-sustainability by 2030, ensuring the preservation of this important historical site.
The park surrounding the mausoleum contains memorials to victims of communism, including the Polish catholic priest Jerzy Popiełuszko. Inside the artificial cave housing Esterhazy’s grave, his ashes rest in a place that holds immense significance for his family and supporters.
Despite the challenges faced during his lifetime, efforts to rehabilitate and honor Count János Esterhazy continue. His daughter, Alice Esterházy-Malfatti, has been advocating for his rehabilitation in Slovakia since 1989, with hopes of achieving official recognition for his sacrifices and contributions.
