Explosive Attack Kills 5 Indian Soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir Clashes
Indian army reports 5 soldiers killed in clash with “terrorists” in Jammu Kashmir
On Sunday, the Indian army encountered a group of “terrorists” in the Bhata Dhurian region of Jammu Kashmir during “intelligence-based operations”, leading to an armed clash between the insurgents and soldiers. According to a statement released by the army, the “terrorists” retaliated with explosives, resulting in the death of five Indian soldiers.
Kashmir, a principality in India and Pakistan, faced the choice of joining newly independent India or Pakistan when Britain withdrew its colony in 1947. Although the population of Kashmir is 90% Muslim and favored joining Pakistan, the prince of the time decided to unite with India. This decision was opposed by the Muslim people of Kashmir and has led to conflicts between India and Pakistan over the region, including wars in 1965 and 1999.
Currently, 45% of Jammu and Kashmir is controlled by India, 35% by Pakistan, and 20% by China. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has passed resolutions since 1948 to demilitarize Kashmir and determine its future through popular vote. India opposes a referendum while Pakistan advocates for UNSC resolutions to be implemented.
