In a recent attack, a fleet of armed drones was used to hit the oil depots in Crimea, resulting in approximately 40 thousand tons of fuel stored in ten separate tanks being destroyed. The Ukrainian army flew their drones over the Black Sea coast, bypassing the radars and air defense systems that were after them, before hitting their target in the morning before daybreak. The explosion was so strong that the whole peninsula shook and the sky was completely covered with black smoke. Russia’s occupation governor in Crimea, Mikhail Razvozhayev, announced that no one was injured in the drone strike, although the huge fire could only be extinguished towards the evening after hours of work.
The Ukrainians had previously targeted the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian navy at the port of Sevastopol and blew up the oil depots, which are the lifeblood of the peninsula this time. In response, Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy demanded new weapons from his Western allies and reiterated his call for the implementation of global sanctions targeting Moscow.
The main target of the Ukrainian army, which is expected to counterattack soon, is the areas occupied by the Russians in the east and south of the country. The Kiev administration also counts Crimea, which has been in Russian hands for nine years, on the list of places to be liberated. Russian officials stated that two drones were used in the attack, with Ukraine’s fleet of armed drones including four drones, two of which were shot down by Russian air defense systems.
This recent attack was seen as a punishment from God and revenge for Uman, a city where Russian invaders razed a block of flats in the city, killing 23 civilians, including five children. Ukrainians informed that 21 of 23 missiles fired by the Russians were destroyed in the air by air defense systems.
The Kremlin says that Crimea will never be returned to Ukraine, and many countries, including Turkey, do not recognize the annexation of Crimea. Russian leader Vladimir Putin made a surprise visit to Sevastopol in mid-March. The blowing up of the Kerch Bridge connecting the Russian mainland and Crimea in October 2022 caused Putin to make a radical tactical change, raining missiles on Ukrainian cities in the following weeks. The US and European countries, which resisted the demand for an air defense system of the Kiev administration for months, sent a large number of systems, including the famous Patriots, to Ukraine with the rain of missiles.
