Extended Application Deadline for Hungarian Space Program

Hungary Making Strides in Global Space Research

Hungary is making significant progress in meeting the goals set out in its space strategy, according to a government official. Orsolya Ferencz, the foreign ministry’s commissioner for space science, emphasized the importance of finding “breakout points” for entering the global space market during a discussion with regional development minister Tibor Navracsics at a civic roundtable in Tapolca.

Ferencz highlighted the global competition in space research, citing the involvement of countries such as China, India, the Gulf states, Türkiye, Israel, South American and Far East countries. She also pointed out the potential for the space industry to generate substantial direct revenue by 2030-2040, estimating it at around 1,000 billion dollars. However, she noted that Hungary lags behind with only 40 space industry companies compared to Czechia’s 300.

During the discussion, Navracsics inquired about Hungary’s prospects in the global space race, to which Ferencz responded by emphasizing that the moment is right for Hungary to establish companies and launch services in space research. She stated that it is capability rather than size or population that matters. Furthermore, she mentioned the launch of UniSpace, a university space engineering course in collaboration with 17 Hungarian universities, and the Hungarian to Orbit (COOL) program, which will send the second Hungarian astronaut to space for 30 days.

The government official also highlighted that the first detailed review of Hungary’s space strategy is set for next year. Additionally, she revealed that out of the four applicants shortlisted for the Hungarian astronaut mission, two will be selected for further training in Houston by the end of the year.

Hungary’s efforts in space research and its plans for the future demonstrate the country’s commitment to advancing its position in the global space market. With strategic initiatives and collaborations, Hungary is poised to make significant contributions to space exploration and technology.
