Extending Theater Beyond Borders for Hungarians

Hungarian-language theater is set to flourish in around 60 Hungarian-inhabited settlements across Slovakia, Transcarpathia, Vojvodina, and Transylvania, thanks to the innovative Borderless (Határtalan) program initiated by the Déryné Program. This initiative was announced recently by Irene Novák, Deputy State Secretary for Arts and Community Culture, during her appearances on Kossuth Radio’s Good Morning, Hungary! and M1 television.
The newly launched Borderless program aims to instill a strong sense of identity in young people, encouraging them to appreciate their Christian culture and Hungarian heritage. Novák emphasized the importance of fostering robust, self-aware communities globally, underscoring the need for Hungarian populations, irrespective of their location, to be active participants in their cultural narratives.
Nurturing Cultural Connectivity
The Déryné Program, which began in March 2020, serves as a vital initiative designed to bridge gaps within the theater profession. It focuses on rejuvenating rural cultural spaces by delivering high-quality theatrical productions to even the most remote villages. This complements other cultural initiatives like the Csoóri Sándor Program, which is dedicated to promoting folk dance and music throughout the Carpathian Basin.
Currently, the program is inviting applications from performing arts organizations in Hungary and neighboring regions where indigenous Hungarian communities reside. This includes individuals involved in drama and experiential education.
Novák elaborated: “We are looking for individuals and organizations capable of implementing these programs across the Carpathian Basin. In partnership with the Rákóczi Association, we will identify venues, including schools, kindergartens, NGOs, and other community organizations.”
Application Process
The application window for the Borderless program opens in late spring, with submissions processed through the program’s official website. Applications will be evaluated continuously by a panel of seasoned professionals from the theater industry.
To enhance the selection process, applicants are required to submit a brief performance video, allowing judges to gain a clearer insight into the productions. Interactive performances featuring Hungarian works, folklore, dance, and music will be given priority during evaluations.
Bringing Theater Closer
This initiative signifies the government’s commitment to expanding support for Hungarian theaters and dance companies beyond national borders. Over the past two years, 27 Hungarian theaters and 10 dance companies have received financial backing through related programs, further enriching the cultural tapestry of the Hungarian diaspora.
In summary, the Déryné program not only aims to revitalize local cultural scenes but also fosters a sense of connection and identity among Hungarian communities spread across multiple countries. As the initiative unfolds, it promises to play a crucial role in sustaining and promoting Hungarian-language theater and arts in diverse settings.
