Kazakhstan Advances in Construction of First Nuclear Power Plant
The Ministry of Energy in Kazakhstan is making significant progress in the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant. According to the latest updates shared by Kazinform news agency on April 2, negotiations with potential partners, uranium reserve development, and personnel training are moving forward.
An international consortium for the construction of the nuclear power plant is being considered, with discussions held with representatives from leading nuclear technology suppliers such as CNNC (China), Rosatom (Russia), KHNP (South Korea), and EDF (France). The selection of partners is expected to be finalized within the year, taking into account various factors that would benefit Kazakhstan.
The Zhambyl district of the Almaty Region has been designated as the site for the nuclear power plant, with an estimated construction timeline of eight years. Kazakhstan plans to build three nuclear power plants to form a full-scale energy cluster and meet the increasing demand for energy resources in the country.
To support the operation of the plant, a strategic uranium reserve will be established, leveraging Kazakhstan’s position as a global leader in uranium production. The country’s vast uranium resources will be utilized to secure its domestic energy supply.
In terms of personnel training, specialists are being equipped with the necessary skills through educational programs in physics, power engineering, electrical engineering, and mining engineering. Educational grants have been allocated for students pursuing degrees in these fields, both domestically and internationally.
Additionally, the Mazhilis in Kazakhstan is developing a new draft law on radioactive waste management and nuclear safety regulations to ensure the highest safety standards for the construction and operation of the nuclear power plant. This legislative initiative aims to align with international standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and address safety concerns raised by the public.
The development of Kazakhstan’s nuclear power sector is a significant step towards meeting the country’s energy needs and fostering economic growth.
