Fahrioğlu: Technical readiness for TC-KKTC electrical connection project

New Electrical Submarine Connection Project to Provide Energy to Northern Cyprus

The Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus has initiated a groundbreaking project with the aim of supplying energy to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) through a submarine electricity connection from Turkey. Prof. Dr. Murat Fahrioğlu, the Program Coordinator of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the university, recently spoke to AA correspondent about the project and its progress.

As a member of the Joint Energy Working Group between Turkey and the TRNC, Fahrioğlu emphasized that extensive studies have been conducted to determine the most effective method of electrical connection between the two countries. After careful consideration, it has been decided that the High Voltage Direct Current Voltage Source Converter (HVDC-VSC) model would be the most suitable for this project.

Fahrioğlu added that Turkey Electricity Transmission AŞ and Cyprus Turkish Electricity Authority are currently working on the technical details of the connection. “The technical aspects of this connection project are now finalized,” he stated. “The HVDC-VSC model is widely used worldwide for inter-country connections.”

In terms of the cable route, Fahrioğlu noted that three routes, approximately 85 kilometers in length, are being considered. The team is also exploring various scenarios to determine the optimal cable capacity for the project.

Once completed, this ambitious project will significantly enhance the energy infrastructure of the TRNC and further strengthen the connection between Turkey and Northern Cyprus. The submarine electricity connection will not only provide a reliable source of energy but also contribute to the sustainable development goals of both countries.

With the technical aspects of the project nearing completion, it is expected that the implementation phase will commence in the near future. The collaboration between Turkey and the TRNC in this initiative sets a precedent for future energy cooperation and paves the way for similar projects in the region.

As advancements in technology continue, innovative energy solutions like the submarine electricity connection are crucial for meeting the growing energy demands of remote regions. This project serves as a testament to the commitment of both Turkey and the TRNC to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for their citizens.
