
Farewell to Turgut Toydemir

The funeral of prominent architect Turgut Toydemir, who was tragically shot by a police officer during a traffic dispute in Istanbul, took place as family, friends, and colleagues gathered to bid him a final farewell.
86-year-old Toydemir was involved in a heated exchange with a police officer identified as S.Ç. while driving on Atatürk Street in Göztepe District on December 19. The altercation escalated when the police officer fired his weapon, resulting in Toydemir sustaining critical injuries.
Despite efforts to save his life, Toydemir passed away in the hospital, leaving behind a legacy of architectural excellence and innovation. The incident has shocked and saddened the community, with many expressing their condolences and solidarity with Toydemir’s family.
The funeral procession began with Toydemir’s body being brought to Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha Mosque in Levent, where his son Mehmet Toydemir accepted condolences on behalf of the family. Following a touching funeral prayer, Toydemir was laid to rest in the family cemetery at Ümraniye Hekimbaşı Cemetery.
Numerous individuals, including Galatasaray Club President Dursun Özbek, business leaders, and acquaintances, attended the funeral to pay their respects to Toydemir and honor his memory. The tragic loss of such a revered figure in the architectural community has left many mourning the untimely passing of Turgut Toydemir.
The police officer responsible for the shooting has been apprehended, suspended from duty, and arrested by judicial authorities. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing, as the community seeks justice for the senseless act that claimed the life of Turgut Toydemir.
