FBI Probes Iran’s Alleged Hacking of Campaign Advisors

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States is currently conducting an investigation into allegations of email hacking targeting consultants involved in the election campaigns of candidates running for the upcoming presidential election.

According to a report by the Washington Post (WP), the FBI confirmed that they are looking into claims that some Iranian groups launched phishing attacks on the email addresses of advisors to candidates participating in the US elections scheduled for November 5. The FBI is particularly focused on whether the email addresses of advisors to the campaigns of Donald Trump, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris were compromised.

Despite these allegations, FBI officials have not found any evidence indicating that these hacking attempts were successful. However, former Trump advisor Roger Stone has reported that several of his personal email accounts have been compromised, although he has limited information on the matter.

In a separate development, a report released by the Microsoft Threat Analysis Center on August 9 highlighted increased cyber activities by Iranian groups seeking to influence the upcoming presidential elections. The report stated that Iran conducted cyber-enabled influence operations in the US elections and targeted government officials through phishing emails.

The report also revealed that a group associated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted a senior presidential campaign official in an attempt to gather sensitive information. Additionally, an Iranian group created fake US-based news websites to promote polarization.

In response to these allegations, Iran’s United Nations Mission denied any interference in the US elections or involvement in cyber attacks. However, the Trump campaign team announced that their email addresses were hacked and blamed Iran for the attack on internal campaign documents. Campaign spokesman Steven Cheung emphasized that the goal of the attack was to create chaos and pointed to a report by Politico magazine which stated that Iranian attackers hacked into the account of a senior American official.

As the investigation continues, concerns about foreign interference and cybersecurity threats in the upcoming presidential election persist. The FBI and other relevant authorities are working to ensure the integrity of the election process and protect against potential cyber threats.
