February Sees a 1.7 Degree Drop in Temperatures
February saw a significant drop in temperatures across Turkey, with the average temperature decreasing by 1.7 degrees compared to the usual 2.4 degrees recorded between 1991-2020. Data from the General Directorate of Meteorology of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanism and Climate revealed that February 2025 was the 39th coldest February in the past 54 years.
In various regions of Turkey, temperatures fluctuated throughout the month. Cities like Muğla, Izmir, Akhisar, and Antalya experienced temperatures below the seasonal norms, while other regions maintained temperatures around the seasonal averages. The lowest temperature of -32.6 degrees was recorded in the Horasan district of Erzurum, while the highest temperature of 21.6 degrees was observed in Köyceğiz district of Muğla.
Regionally, the Marmara Region experienced temperatures around the seasonal norms, with the lowest temperature recorded in Bilecik at -8.8 degrees and the highest in Edirne at 19 degrees. In the Aegean Region, temperatures in Izmir, Muğla, and Akhisar were below seasonal norms, while other areas remained close to average. The Mediterranean Region saw temperatures below normal in Denizli, Burdur, and Antalya, with temperatures ranging from -18 degrees in Kahramanmaraş to 21.8 degrees in Köyceğiz.
In the Central Anatolia Region, temperatures were slightly below zero, with the lowest temperature in Kayseri at -23.3 degrees and the highest in Polatlı at 15.7 degrees. The Black Sea Region experienced temperatures below normal in certain areas, while the Eastern Anatolia Region had temperatures below seasonal norms in places like Başkale and Sarıkamış.
Lastly, the Southeastern Anatolia Region saw temperatures around the seasonal norms, with the lowest temperature in Diyarbakır at -9.9 degrees and the highest in Ceylanpınar at 20.9 degrees. Despite the variations in temperatures across the country, these fluctuations are a reminder of the dynamic climate patterns experienced in Turkey each year.
