El Chapo’s Sons Accused of Smuggling Fentanyl into the US
The US Department of Justice has accused Ivan Guzman Salazar, Jesus Guzman Salazar, and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, also known as “Chapitos,” of smuggling fentanyl into the United States through the Sinaloa Cartel, established by their father. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more potent than morphine. The drug is responsible for the deaths of approximately 107,000 Americans in 2021, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The Ministry of Justice has stated that Ovidio Guzman Lopez, another son of El Chapo, was arrested in Mexico on January 5, where he is being held in the high-security Altiplano Prison. The US has requested Ovidio’s extradition and a life sentence for his involvement in six crimes, including drug trafficking. The Mexican government’s response to the request is currently unknown.
The Ministry of Justice also alleges that Ivan and Jesus Guzman captured and tortured rivals of the cartel and fed some of them to tigers. Wuhan Shuokang Biological Technology and Suzhou Xiaoli Pharmatech, chemical companies based in China, have also been accused of selling substances used in drug production to the Sinaloa Cartel. Legal action has been taken against four Chinese citizens who allegedly sold substances to these companies.
Of the 28 people prosecuted, 23 are in Mexico, four in China, and one in Guatemala. Legal proceedings against these suspects are being conducted in New York, Chicago, and Washington. Two Chinese companies have been placed on the sanctions list, and a reward of $1 million has been placed on each of the four suspects working in these companies.
The Ministry of Justice has offered a reward of $10 million for the capture of Jesus Guzman Salazar and Ivan Guzman Salazar.
