Fidesz accuses opposition of causing Budapest bankruptcy

The Budapest chapter of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party has accused the city’s leadership of mismanaging its finances, leading to bankruptcy. In a Facebook post, Fidesz alleged that Mayor Gergely Karácsony and other opposition leaders had failed to account for missing money and were “wrapped in stubborn denial”. The party claimed that a recent advertising tender that would have brought the city an annual HUF 1.7 billion ($4.57 million) for eight years was bungled by the deputy mayor. Although a French company won the contract in both rounds of the tender, the city rejected the first agreement. Fidesz said the decision has left the city nearly HUF 3.5 billion ($9.42 million) short since November 2019.
