Fidesz Leader Calls for End to Public Violence and Aggression
Máté Kocsis, the Fidesz parliamentary group leader, has urged the left wing to put a stop to “public violence, bullying, and lies.” During a press conference, Kocsis specifically called for László Varju of the opposition Democratic Coalition and András Fekete-Győr of Momentum to step down from public life.
Kocsis pointed out that Varju has been convicted of assault and Fekete-Győr was sentenced for a violent act against an official. He emphasized that anyone who has been convicted of acts like disorderly conduct and causing bodily harm should resign from their public responsibilities.
According to Kocsis, acts of public aggression are on the rise, and he referenced recent actions by the antifa movement in Hungary. Additionally, Kocsis announced the ruling parties’ decision to nominate Tamas Sulyok, the current head of the Constitutional Court, for president of the republic during the press conference.
The Fidesz parliamentary group also announced that Tamás Deutsch, who has led the Fidesz delegation in the European Parliament, will lead the Fidesz party’s list in the upcoming European parliamentary elections, at their meeting in Balatonalmadi.
Meanwhile, Hungary’s public media foundation MTVA released a statement in which they referred to Varju as a “criminal” following a sentence handed down to him for rowdy behavior. The statement accused Varju of being one of the deputies who forced entry to MTVA headquarters in 2018, causing a scandal and disrupting broadcasting. MTVA condemned any attempt to interfere with the independent media, whether through political pressure or physical violence.
Kocsis’ call to end public violence and aggression comes amidst growing tension between the ruling Fidesz party and the opposition, with both sides trading accusations of criminal behavior. The situation remains contentious, and it is unclear how the political landscape in Hungary will continue to unfold.
