Fidesz Initiates National Consultation on Economic Neutrality in Trade as EU Member

Fidesz Proposes “National Consultation” Public Survey on Economic Issues

Mate Kocsis, the ruling party’s group leader, announced on Monday that Fidesz is proposing a “National Consultation” public survey on various economic topics including trade neutrality, support for small and medium-sized enterprises, wage increases, employee loans, housing, and family support.

In light of the economic challenges stemming from the pandemic and global conflicts, new economic solutions are necessary to steer the country in the right direction, Kocsis emphasized during a break in the two-day Fidesz-Christian Democrat group meeting in Esztergom, Hungary.

Despite the economic disruptions, Hungary’s economic outlook remains positive, with Kocsis stating that the proposed measures would further strengthen the economy and improve people’s prosperity.

Highlighting the importance of maintaining trade relations with both Eastern and Western countries, Kocsis criticized the European leadership for engaging in what he called a “trade cold war” that isolates itself from Eastern economies. He stressed the significance of Hungarian neutrality and openness towards both directions for the country’s economic well-being.

While expressing belief in the government’s policy direction, Kocsis emphasized the importance of seeking public input on sensitive issues. The proposed survey aims to gather public opinion on key economic matters, including support for SMEs, wage increases, employee loans, housing initiatives, and family support.

Among the proposals is a plan to raise the minimum wage to 400,000 forints (EUR 1,000) and the average wage to 1 million forints in the near future, which Kocsis described as a realistic goal. The survey will also inquire about providing interest-free loans to young people entering the workforce and promoting affordable housing options for both students and first-time homebuyers.

Additionally, the questionnaire will address family support issues, with the government’s intention to double the family tax allowance and explore other forms of assistance. Kocsis mentioned that these proposals would be considered at the party group’s meeting later in the week, acknowledging possible opposition from Brussels and underscoring the need for strong support from Hungarian citizens.

The proposed measures outlined in the “National Consultation” aim to address key economic challenges facing Hungary and empower citizens to voice their opinions on shaping the country’s economic future.
