Fidesz MEP Calls for Action Against Gas Market Speculation
In a recent statement, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from the ruling Fidesz party emphasized the urgent need for action from Brussels to address high energy prices and gas market speculation.
András Gyürk, speaking on behalf of the Fidesz group, highlighted the concerning increase in European gas prices over the past few months, with prices rising by around 20 percent. He criticized the European Commission for failing to take action when gas transits through Ukraine were halted earlier this year.
Gyürk noted that the EC, under the leadership of Ursula von der Leyen, had pledged to lower energy prices but had not followed through on this commitment. He pointed out that the market price of natural gas had increased significantly since November, despite promises from Brussels.
The MEP called on the European Commission to take concrete steps to combat gas market speculation, which has contributed to the rise in prices. He also urged the EC to provide support to East European countries that have been negatively affected by the disruption in Ukraine gas transits.
Gyürk emphasized the importance of reducing energy prices for economic competitiveness and the well-being of citizens. He stressed the need for Brussels to take decisive action to address the challenges in the gas market and ensure a more stable and affordable energy supply for European consumers.
