Fidesz MEPs call for effective climate protection measures

The European Parliament’s proposals to reduce methane emissions from the energy sector faced opposition from Hungary’s governing Fidesz party MEPs Edina Tóth and András Gyürk. While acknowledging the importance of reducing methane leakage, the politicians warned that the proposal could create higher costs, a bureaucratic burden on businesses, and threaten energy supply security. Tóth stressed that the reduction and metering measures being proposed are excessively bureaucratic and could create a significant financial burden. Meanwhile, Gyürk noted that international cooperation based on mutual respect would be more effective than these “absurd and lecturing proposals.” The opposition party warned that the ill-considered measures would hinder rather than help methane reduction targets.
