Fidesz Parliamentary Leader Condemns German Antifa Activists
Foreign anti-fascist protesters gathered in Budapest on Friday to demand the release of German Antifa activist Maja T, but their actions have been met with criticism from Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party. The parliamentary group leader, Matthew Kocsis, accused the protesters of supporting violence and defending criminals.
In a Facebook post, Kocsis stated that the group of foreign “communist antifa activists” had assaulted people on the streets of Budapest in 2023 and then returned home without facing any consequences. He specifically called out Italian activist Ilaria Salis, who has since become an MEP and is reportedly evading justice by hiding behind her immunity.
Kocsis also criticized the protesters in front of the Budapest courthouse, who were urging Germany not to extradite Maja T to Hungary, accusing them of defending criminals. He emphasized that those who commit violent acts should face trial and that the case needed to have consequences in Hungary.
Hungary is continuing to push for the extradition of the other activists involved in the assault to face trial in Hungary. Kocsis emphasized that foreign extremists need to understand that violent actions will not go unpunished in Hungary.
