Brussels Urged to Cease Promotion of “Radical Leftist Ideologies” by Hungarian MEP
In a statement made in Strasbourg on Wednesday, Balázs Hidvéghi, MEP of ruling Fidesz, called on Brussels to halt its “aggressive promotion” of “radical leftist ideologies” that could potentially harm opportunities for member states to collaborate.
Hidvéghi expressed his concerns to Hungarian journalists, criticizing the European Parliament for overstepping its boundaries and attempting to act as a “moral police” over member states.
He argued against the European Parliament’s practice of disguising political and moral debates as legal discussions and imposing sanctions on countries that uphold traditional values. Hidvéghi emphasized that critical moral issues such as life, death, family, marriage, and child education should not be within the jurisdiction of the European Parliament. Instead, he asserted that these norms have been established over thousands of years and should remain under the sovereign rights of individual nation states. He advocated for respecting the diverse positions that different countries may hold on these matters.
It is clear that Hidvéghi believes that member states should retain the autonomy to make decisions regarding moral and social issues without interference from Brussels. As discussions on these topics continue within the European Parliament, it remains to be seen how this debate will unfold.
