Finance Ministry Keeping an Eye on Unregistered E-Cigarette Trade

VDK Expands Efforts to Combat Illegal E-Cigarette Trade

The Ministry of Treasury and Finance has revealed that the Revenue Administration (VDK) is intensifying its efforts to tackle the informal economy, focusing on specific products and sectors. A recent study conducted at VDK’s Risk Analysis Center has shed light on the illegal trade of e-cigarettes in Turkey.

It is important to note that e-cigarettes are subject to the same restrictions as traditional tobacco products under current legislation. This means that advertising, promotional activities, and sales to individuals under the age of 18 are strictly prohibited. Furthermore, online sales and shipments of e-cigarettes are also banned, and the trade of cartridges and devices containing nicotine is not allowed for free trade. Similar measures have been implemented in the USA and the European Union (EU).

VDK has taken action against individuals engaging in illegal e-cigarette trade for the purpose of making unregistered income. Over 20 billion liras in monetary transactions have been analyzed, and the affairs of more than 50 thousand taxpayers have been scrutinized. Taxpayers found to be involved in illegal activities were subjected to direct tax inspections, leading to the discovery of a 300 million lira worth of illegal e-cigarette trade.

Cooperation with law enforcement agencies has been crucial in tracking down those responsible for illegal trade. Minister of Treasury and Finance Mehmet Şimşek emphasized the importance of expanding the fight against the informal economy to combat illegal and smuggled products. He stated, “We are dedicated to increasing our efforts in the fight against the informal economy, ensuring fairness and efficiency in the tax system.”

The measures taken by VDK reflect a commitment to upholding regulations and cracking down on illegal activities in the e-cigarette industry. By expanding their efforts, VDK aims to create a level playing field for businesses and promote compliance with tax laws across various sectors.
