Mayor Péter Szentgyörgyvölgyi has made a decision to prioritize the concerns of the public by banning fireworks in tourist areas and squares of District V (Belváros-Lipótváros) on New Year’s Eve. Those who still choose to set off fireworks may face a fine of HUF 200,000 (EUR 480), as reported by Hungarian Nation.

In a statement to Hungarian Nation, Mayor Péter Szentgyörgyvölgyi emphasized that the municipality has always taken measures in the spirit of peaceful coexistence and in the interest of residents. Following consultations with the Budapest Police Headquarters, a unanimous decision was made at a recent council meeting to regulate fireworks in District V. The mayor expressed confidence that the new regulations will ensure a peaceful, safe, and accident-free celebration for those welcoming the New Year in the city center.

During a press conference, the District V Municipality and the Budapest Police Headquarters highlighted that individuals using fireworks in specific areas of Belváros-Lipótváros will face sanctions. They emphasized that Budapest, particularly during the holiday season, remains a safe and beautiful destination, attracting locals, visitors from across the country, and tourists from abroad to its Christmas markets in the city center.

The use of pyrotechnic devices in Belváros-Lipótváros is restricted from 6 p.m. on December 28, 2024, to 6 a.m. on January 1, 2025, as per the municipality’s order. Additionally, it is still prohibited for individuals to possess or use firecrackers in Hungary.

The police also clarified that individuals aged 14 or older can purchase and use Class 1 pyrotechnic articles without a license, while those aged 16 or older can do the same for Class 2 articles throughout the year. Class 3 fireworks can be purchased, possessed, stored, and used by legal adults without authorization from December 28 at 6 p.m. until January 1 at 6 a.m. However, professional pyrotechnic articles of Class 4 with high active substance content can only be purchased by qualified pyrotechnicians with a valid license during this period.

The measures aim to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals celebrating New Year’s Eve in District V. As Budapest gears up for the festive season, residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy the city’s atmosphere while abiding by the regulations set forth by the authorities.
