First Hungarian Ship Resumes Circumnavigation of the Globe

The legendary sailing ship of Nándor Fa and József Gál, St. Jupat, the first Hungarian ship to circumnavigate the Earth in 1985, has been put back into the water. After its return home, the ship remained on Lake Balaton for a short time before being donated to The Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport in 1996.

Now, the ship will be exhibited at the Mathias Corvinus Collegium center in Révfülöp on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. It will undergo a full restoration and conservation by spring 2025 and will be made available to MCC students for educational purposes.

Sailor Nándor Fa expressed his joy at being able to relive the experiences of almost 40 years ago and pass them on to younger generations. József Gál highlighted the importance of passing on the spirit and strength of the ship to young people, noting the impact of their offshore sailing achievements.

Domonkos Schneller, Director General of The Hungarian Museum of Science, Technology and Transport, emphasized the institution’s mission to preserve and restore iconic Hungarian craft like the St. Jupat. The presentation of the ship in its authentic setting is a key part of this mission.

On September 26, 1985, Nándor Fa and József Gál embarked on their sailing journey from Opatija, Croatia, on the St. Jupat. The trip took almost two years, covering 70,000 kilometers, docking in 12 countries, and spending a total of 295 days on the water.

The restoration and exhibition of the St. Jupat symbolize the resilience and pioneering spirit of Hungarian sailors, inspiring future generations to embark on their own adventures on the high seas.
