The Embassy of Peru in Hungary, in collaboration with the Museum of Ethnography, recently unveiled a captivating photo exhibition titled “Shipibo-Konibo: Portraits of my Blood” by Peruvian photographer David Díaz. The event was attended by diplomats, government officials, media representatives, and art enthusiasts, who were all mesmerized by the cultural richness of the Shipibo-Konibo people showcased in the exhibition.
During the opening ceremony, Ambassador Pérez Alván urged guests to explore and appreciate the Shipibo-Konibo indigenous community living in Peru’s Amazon region. Known for their intricate “Kené” designs, which are symbolic of their worldview and spirituality, the Shipibo-Konibo women incorporate visions induced by the traditional psychoactive brew “ayahuasca” into their artwork, creating designs filled with profound visual and spiritual inspiration.
Artist David Díaz, a member of the Shipibo-Konibo community, provides an intimate glimpse into a society steeped in tradition, resilience, and beauty through his photographs. Each image tells a story, capturing the essence of a collective identity navigating the challenges of the modern world. The ambassador praised David’s work for its dedication to preserving and celebrating the identity of the Shipibo-Konibo people.
The Amazon region of Peru, home to the Shipibo-Konibo community, is not only renowned for its biodiversity but also for its cultural diversity, hosting 51 out of Peru’s 55 indigenous groups and encompassing 44 out of 48 indigenous languages spoken in the country. Preserving this region is crucial for safeguarding the heritage and livelihoods of its inhabitants, like the Shipibo-Konibo people highlighted in David’s exhibition.
