The History of 15 March in Hungary: From Suppression to Celebration
March 15th holds a special place in Hungarian history as a day of significance, commemorating the 1848-49 Revolution and War of Independence. However, this was not always the case, as celebrating this date was once viewed as subversive by ruling authorities. Here, we take a look back at five memorable instances of 15 March in Hungarian history.
Before the Austro-Hungarian compromise, the suppression of 15 March in 1860 was particularly bloody. Following the defeat of the revolution, the holiday was banned, and those who dared to commemorate it faced severe consequences. Despite this, the memory of 15 March persisted as a form of resistance against the ruling regime.
In the Horthy era, commemorations of 15 March continued, though it was only officially recognized as a holiday in 1927. During World War II, commemorations turned into anti-war demonstrations, with police forces violently cracking down on protesters in 1942.
The Communist regime used the centennial anniversary in 1948 for propaganda purposes, but by 1951, 15 March was demoted to a regular working day. The regime closely monitored commemorations after the 1956 revolution, merging it with Communist anniversaries to suppress any revolutionary sentiment.
Protests erupted in the 1970s, with demonstrations escalating and authorities cracking down on dissenters. However, in 1986, after a decade of subdued protests, large demonstrations took place once again, signaling a renewed sense of opposition to the regime.
