Focus on Minimum Wage at Last Meeting
The process of determining the new minimum wage, which directly affects more than 7 million employees and indirectly impacts the entire society, is currently underway in Turkey.
The Minimum Wage Determination Commission, consisting of representatives from workers, employers, and the government, has been meeting to discuss and decide on the new minimum wage figure. The Commission’s fourth meeting is scheduled to take place this week, where the new minimum wage is expected to be determined.
One of the major points of focus in the discussions is TÜRK-İŞ’s proposal to apply a 45 percent inflation increase to the current minimum wage of net 17 thousand 2 liras, and then add a 20 percent welfare share on top of that. The employer side, however, is hesitant to agree to TÜRK-İŞ’s request of 29 thousand 583 liras, as they aim for a more gradual increase in minimum wage.
Various raise scenarios have been considered, with potential figures for the new minimum wage estimated to be around 22-25 thousand liras, depending on the percentage increase applied.
The current minimum wage in Turkey stands at 17 thousand 2 lira net per month for a worker, with a total cost of 23 thousand 502 liras and 94 kuruş for the employer. This includes social security premiums and employer unemployment insurance fund contributions.
The Minimum Wage Determination Commission plays a crucial role in setting the minimum wage in Turkey, with decisions made through majority vote. The final decision on the new minimum wage will have far-reaching effects on millions of workers across the country.
