Foreign Interference in Canadian Elections: Threats from China and India

The Binary Crisis in Ottawa

According to a report from Ottowa Citizen, the Deputy Director of Operations at CSIS, Vanessa Lloyd, spoke at a press conference about how certain states have been using artificial intelligence-based systems to interfere in elections.

Lloyd specifically pointed out that China is highly likely to utilize artificial intelligence to intervene in elections. She also mentioned that the Indian government has both the intention and capability to interfere in the Canadian people and democratic process.

Furthermore, Lloyd added Russia and Pakistan to the list of countries likely to engage in similar activities against Canada.

In response to these potential threats, Canada’s new prime minister, Mark Carney, dissolved parliament and announced early elections on April 28th.

Intelligence officials in the country have raised concerns about China’s involvement in the 2019 federal parliamentary elections, alleging that Chinese networks financed some candidates to influence the outcome. It was also suggested that the former Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, was made aware of these activities.

As Canada prepares for early elections, the government is taking these reports seriously and working to ensure the integrity of the democratic process.
