Foreign Minister Fidan to Visit Russia

Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan is set to have important meetings with Russian officials, including his counterpart Sergey Lavrov, and participate in the BRICS+ Session scheduled for June 11th.

The discussions during these meetings will cover various topics such as the latest developments in Gaza, as well as regional and international issues including Ukraine, Syria, Libya, and the South Caucasus. Minister Fidan will emphasize the importance of ending the ongoing conflicts in Turkey’s region peacefully and express Turkey’s readiness to offer support towards achieving this goal.

Economic and commercial cooperation will also be a key focus during the talks, with both parties working towards increasing mutual investments in order to reach the 100 billion dollar trade volume target set by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Tourism between Turkey and Russia will also be a topic of discussion, as it is seen as an important channel of interaction between the two countries. The number of Russian tourists visiting Turkey has increased by 20 percent in 2023, reaching over 6 million.

Minister Fidan is also expected to meet with Turkish business people operating in Russia during his visit. Additionally, the BRICS+ Session will include the participation of 15 countries alongside the BRICS members, with discussions on international security, sustainable development, and global governance issues.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had previously attended the BRICS+ Session in 2018, and as of January 1st, Russia has taken over the BRICS Term Presidency from the Republic of South Africa. The theme of the Russian Presidency is focused on “Strengthening multilateralism for equitable global development and security”.

The 16th BRICS Summit is scheduled to take place in Kazan on October 22-24, where further discussions on these important international issues are expected to continue.
