What makes this incident even more appalling is that the tourist had not even ordered the drink; it was presented to him as a complimentary gesture, only to later appear on the bill at an exorbitant price.
This bar was part of a criminal operation that had been exploiting tourists for years, according to sources. Their tactics included inflating drink prices and using coercion to extract payments. Some patrons who resisted were even threatened with physical harm, reported Promotions. One victim managed to escape by deceiving an assailant that he was going to his hotel to get cash, and then fleeing upon arrival.
Hungarian authorities have taken action, arresting three men and one woman believed to be connected to these scams. The suspects are currently facing legal proceedings but have denied any wrongdoing.
Not loners
Unfortunately, such scams are not uncommon in Budapest. Certain establishments, especially along Váci Street, have a reputation for targeting solo male tourists. Attractive women would lure these individuals into specific bars, order expensive drinks, and then present inflated bills that tourists felt pressured to pay.
